7 Card Stud

Until Texas Holdem came along, 7 Card Stud was the most popular and exciting Poker variant, especially in the United States. 7 Card Stud involves antes and bring-in bets, allowing for players to match or equal many more bets during the betting rounds, and the overall opportunity to win large pot amounts. Not too hard to learn, 7 Card Stud is suitable for most Poker players, and many find that once they start, they simply cannot go back.

The course of an online 7 Card Stud Poker game:
  • 7 Card Stud Poker is played with “antes”, which are small bets that must be put into the pot before the first cards are to be dealt, and act as incentive to the players. The ante is usually a small percentage of the stakes.
  • Once all players have anted, the dealer deals 2 pocket cards face down to all players in a clockwise direction, and then one face up card known as the “Door”.
  • The first round of betting is called the “Bring-in”, and requires the player with the lowest showing door card to post a mandatory initial bet, usually half the small stake amount. If 2 players show an equally low door card, then the bring-in player is determined according to the suit (in order from strongest to highest: spades, hearts, diamonds, clubs). The bring-in’s purpose is mainly to build the pot. Betting follows by additional players in a clockwise direction, who must either call, fold, or raise the bring-in bet. If the bring-in bet was half the lower stake amount, the first raise will bring the bet up to the full amount. For example: In a $5-10 game, if the bring-in is $2 then the following raise must be equal to $3 to complete the bring-in at $5. All raises after this are in $5 increments.
  • When all bets have been made, a 2nd up card is dealt to each player called the “3rd Street”. This time, the highest showing hand opens the betting round, and bets and raises are limited to the lower stake amount. However, if a pair is showing in a hand during the 3rd Street, the player has the option of raising his/her betting amount, or “raising the stake” for that round.
  • The next round is called “4th Street”, in which a 3rd face card is dealt to each player. The highest face card opens the betting round, and betting is limited from now onwards to the higher stake amount.
  • Known as the “5th Street”, this betting round works exactly the same as 4th Street.
  • In the “River” round of betting, a 5th and final card is dealt face down to each player, and the highest showing hand opens the betting.
  • The final player to have bet or raised in the River will show their hand first, and if all players checked through, each player will show his/her in a clockwise direction. If a player’s hand is weaker than the hand revealed before it, the player has the option to “muck” – fold without showing the hand. The best hand is awarded the pot, and determined according to standard Poker hand rankings.
