The difference between an average poker player and a really good poker player lies in a well formulated poker strategy. As in all things flexibility is the key.

  • A good poker strategy is at the heart of every good poker player's game. Formulating your own strategy can determine whether you win or lose. A good start would be to try to avoid common mistakes most beginners make.
  • In poker there is such a thing as luck in the short run however it is in the long run that the above average player will win and those not so strong will lose. Luck is of course a necessary factor and even when mistakes are made in a hand, it can still be won.
  • Some mistakes have a lesser impact on the outcome than others. For instance if you are flopping quads all the time without consideration of the size of the pot, it is a mistake. Your opponent will fold to a massive overbet. But quads do not occur that frequently so the mistake is of a lesser nature.
  • A mistake of a more considerable proportion would be to call a raise when you are out of position with a bad hand. This is one mistake which you can ill afford. You will literally be throwing your money to the dogs in every round. The same goes for calling too much, you will play too many hands and take them beyond a reasonable distance. It is a sure way to lose more often than is necessary.
  • Even professional poker players make small mistakes, in the game it is called "leaks". These are things like not raising the bet enough when you are in position or raising too much with low pocket pairs. Not raising enough means that you will not get check-raised and you will lose some money in the long haul.
A final few remarks that will raise the level of your game:
  • Avoid playing too many hands before the flop.
  • Do not take your hand too far past the flop.
  • Go with the situation and the numbers, remember poker is a mathematical game.
  • Above all do not let your emotions get the better of you, take a long view.
  • Poker requires a clear head which enables solid decision making, this is the mark of good poker players.
