Earlier this month in Madison, Wisconsin the world famous eleven-time WSOP bracelet winner poker player Phil Hellmuth came to his home town to help raise money in a special charity event.
Despite being known in the poker world as the “Poker Brat”, everyone was delighted to see him as the host at the “Hold ‘Em with HospiceCare” event. The money raised by the event is being donated to HospiceCare, a non-profit organisation which takes care of over 630 patients on a daily basis across the whole of southern Wisconsin. They deliver services to patients’ homes and help them with everyday tasks in order to give their families a rest.
Hellmuth said that he was delighted with the number of participants in the event joking that “too many people signed up”. Hellmuth is known for taking part in poker charity events and this one was no exception. They were aiming to raise between a quarter of a million and $400,000 during the event with players such as Jerry Kelly, Matt Kenseth and Barry Alvarez taking part.
The event was sponsored by a number of businesses including Adams Outdoor Advertising, UB.com, Coors Light, McDonalds, Clear Channel Radio, Miller Lite and Zambrick Honda. Honda donated one of the prizes giving away a two year lease on a 2001 Honda Accord LX.
There were a number of different tickets on sale for the event. Players could by a $500 ticket which gave them a place in the tournament and special access to a VIP room where they had the opportunity to chat to Hellmuth. There was also the option to buy a $300 ticket which gave players food, drinks and a place in the tournament. Finally there were $100 tickets on sale which gave players access to the event but not entry to the tournament. There were numerous raffle prizes handed out as well as a $10,000 seat to play at the 2011 World Series of Poker.
Since becoming a poker celebrity Hellmuth has often used his status to raise money for worthy causes. Numerous times he has hosted tournaments in Las Vegas to help the law enforcement community. He has frequently helped raise money for the TASER Foundation; this is an organisation which helps families of law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. Additionally, Hellmuth has also helped other charities such as Doctors Without Borders, Habitat for Humanity and Heifer International which aims to help the hungry and poor across the globe.
