Get to know one of the poker industry’s most successful players. All the answers from Thang Luu’s exclusive Poker News Daily interview are here for you to learn and use!
Thang Luu is one of the online poker industry’s most recognized and successful professional players. He is one of Vietnam’s biggest exports, having become the world’s unrivaled champion at all Omaha High Low Split Eight or Better poker games. Over the last 3 years, he has won the official title twice and been first runner up once.
Nicknamed as “Tiger” Luu, Luu began his journey to professional poker playing back in 1999. As a beginner poker player, he insisted on playing several variations so as to improve his skills, but even then, his talent and love for Omaha was obvious. He became a serious Omaha player in late 2003, early 2004 playing carefully with low limits and gradually building up his talent.
These days, as the world’s best Omaha player, Luu barely ever plays Texas Hold’em poker. he explains that Texas Hold’em lacks the action and fun that he has grown accustomed to in Omaha, and when thee are only 2 cards on the table, it can even get somewhat boring! The only Hold’em variation that he might play every now and then is No Limit Hold’em. This is interesting since he doesn’t enjoy Ni Limit Omaha.
With regards to limit games, Luu claims that he is a better Omaha High Low player than a Pot Limit Omaha player. Despite this, he still plays them every once in a while alongside his strong preference for High Low Omaha games.
In previous years, Luu’s road to the title of best ever Omaha layer was relatively smooth, clear via his undefeated chip lead throughout the entire tournament. This year, however, the road to the final table was not so smooth. Even at the final table his chip count changes repeatedly before being crowned the winner. Luu accredits his seriousness about being crowned the winner as the reason he managed to overcome the difficulty of the tournament. He explains that he felt confident from the very first day, so much so that he flew directly to Vegas from his holiday just to compete.
Luu travels regularly to Vietnam to holiday and see his family. Yet now that he is back in Vegas, he plans on competing in up to 9 more tournaments, among them the $2,500 and $10,00 Omaha High Low events, plus, of course, the $10,000 Main Event. In the meantime, he deserved well-earned congratulations!
