Poker tournaments and ring games required different playing strategies, and your game will improve significantly if you implement them properly. Learn all you need for them here.
Poker Tournaments and Poker ring games are very different in nature; whilst ring games relate to all Poker games in non-tournament format, Poker tournaments involve unique betting structures, time limits and other relevant limitations. This is why the strategy needed to win a game differs so significantly, and below you will find a comparison between the two kinds of strategies recommended for each of them:
Playing Ring Game Poker:
• Bankroll – the size of your bankroll will strongly affect your capabilities in Poker ring games. You can plan out the way in which you spend your bankroll so that it lasts longer, and you will find that all the best ring game players are those that spend many hours of practising ring game play. Examples are Howard Lederer and Annie Duke. Know when to spend, and know when to save, and when you do spend, make it worthwhile.
• Practice, practice, practice – Poker ring games differ to tournaments in that the more you play, the better you will get. This includes repetitiveness, since the online games are more predictable than in Poker tournaments. Keep at it, and your pots will come.
Playing poker Tournaments:
• Dynamics – Poker tournaments differ greatly from ring games in that they are more dynamic; they have changing betting sizes, changing time intervals and changing table sizes, not to mention the changing bankrolls and pots. They key to overcoming these is the ability to adapt to the changes. this means knowing to identify that the structure of something has changed, and then changing your approach accordingly. If it doesn’t work, try something else – but don’t continue using something unsuccessful or something suited to a different scene.
• Payouts – on average, a tournament Poker player will lose 75% of the time, and win only 25%. What makes it worthwhile is that the pots are significantly larger and the play shorter. Keep this in mind when you’re losing, because it will help you to soldier on until the pot is eventually yours.
Key in both Poker tournaments and Ring Games is that you realize that you are playing in a different kind of game, identify the differences and change your tactic accordingly – play well in both, but not the same!
