Only in the last decade that triple draw lowball has emerged. It is a draw poker variant. Triple draw lowball is played with a 52-card deck and five-card hands.
There are some golden rules that needs to be observed to do well at triple draw lowball. The poker rules for triple draw lowball are fairly easy to follow if you are familiar with poker. Triple draw lowball is played by up to 6 players and the betting structure is similar to hold-em poker. Although the game is relatively new, it already has a strong following in poker circles.
Rule No. 1 - Do not play a hand without a deuce unless you get in free from the blinds. Remember straights are no good.
Rule No. 2 - Coming in limp already marks your hand as not worth playing, it is always best to come in with a raise. Hands that are not good enough should not be played.
Rule No. 3 - As in real estate, it is all about position in triple draw lowball. Seeing your opponents’ draws first makes decisions about drawing easier. Bad draws can cost you the pot.
Rule No. 4 - If you were a card ahead in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, you should always bet. This places pressure on the weaker draw. You should bear in mind though that other players who were a card ahead in these rounds will probably also follow this strategy.
Rule No. 5 - If you do not have position, draw to better hands
There are 4 rounds of betting and 3 draws in between. When it comes to showdown, the lowest hand wins.
The 2 tiered limit structure applies in triple draw lowball. There is a button, a small blind and a big blind. Both these blinds are live and are placed by the 2 players to the left of the button. When there are no more cards left to draw from, the discarded cards are shuffled to form a new stub.
Break - to throw a card from a pat hand
Rough – a low ranking hand which is worse than others of the same type
Standing pat – not to draw cards
Smooth – a high ranking hand, better than others of the same type
Snow – not to draw cards even with cards that are unlikely to win, in other words to bluff
Stub – replacement cards for discards
Wheel – the best possible hands
