There are advantages and disadvantages to any poker variation. Find out all those for Fixed Limit Hold’em, so that you can play it for reasons that are beneficial to you
Fixed Limit is the most popular and standard form of Texas Hold’em poker. The betting amounts are fixed, as the name implies, and this has certain advantages and disadvantages. All of these will be explained here below, so that you can play the game for reasons that will benefit you, your bankroll and your style of playing.
The Bets:
The kind of bets that players are limited to using in the first two rounds of betting in Fixed Limit Hold’em are called “small bets” and are the lower number in a table stake. During the last two rounds of betting, players are limited to using “big bets,” and these are equal to two small bets.
The Pros:
- Fixed Limit Texas Hold’em Poker is easily and quickly learnt, since it has a static and simple structure.
- Fixed Limit Hold’em may limit players to the amount that they can win, but just so, it also limits players to the amount that they can lose. This makes Fixed Limit the safest Poker variant, and it is therefore highly suited to inexperienced players.
- Since players are limited to certain betting amounts, a bet or raise is often not enough to eliminate an opponent from the game. This means that the hands must be stronger, and players will often fight to the showdown to take the pot. In short, Fixed Limit is an action-packed game!
- Practically every move in Fixed Limit can be calculated to predict possible wins or losses, since the betting amounts are always the same. A basic maths formula is all you need in order to do this.
- Players are always able to determine how worthwhile it is for them to pursue or stay in a hand, simply by comparing their odds to the pot odds. This is all part of basic Poker strategy, and the more prepared you come to the table, the better your chances are of playing a winning game.
The Cons:
- Whilst Fixed Limit Hold’em is easy to learn, it is extremely difficult to master.
- Defending strong hands can be tricky when your opponents are able to calculate the strength of their moves against you. It is therefore also difficult to force other players to fold.
- Fixed Limit games are generally raked.
