Texas Holdem

The Objective of Texas Holdem is to make a 5-card hand using 2 of your private cards and 3 of the community cards. This is done through a series of betting rounds, and in the final round, the player with the highest ranked hand wins. For a detailed overview of all the rules, terminology, and game play, you’ll want to read this page.

Objective & Rules

Texas Holdem is a Poker variation in which the main objective is to make the best 5 card hand. Played with 8-10 players, this is achieved by combining 2 of the player’s private cards (called “hole/pocket” cards) with 3 of the 5 community cards dealt face-up throughout the game’s betting rounds. There are 5 betting rounds in Texas Holdem, and during each round the players must bet on the possibility of their hand having the strongest card combination, so that they may win and be awarded the sum of all the bets made throughout the game, known as the “pot”. Player’s hands are ranked according to standard Poker hand rankings, and there are 3 kinds of betting limits that can be used in a Texas Holdem game:

  1. Limit Texas Holdem – a predetermined betting limit is set.
  2. No-Limit Texas Holdem – players can bet all their chips at any point in the game.
  3. Pot-Limit Texas holdem - players can bet no more than the pot amount.

Game-play

The Pre-flop Round - In Texas Holdem, small compulsory bets called “blinds” are placed before the game begins, as incentive. The player left-most of the dealer posts the small blind – half the minimum betting amount, and the next left-most player posts the big blind – the minimum betting amount. After, the dealer deals 2 hole cards to each player, who must then decide whether to “call”, “raise”, or “fold”. To call is to match the amount of the big blind, to raise is to increase the bet to a certain amount, and to fold is to forfeit the hand. When all players have called an equal amount, or folded, the betting ends and the next round begins.

The flop - 3 community cards are dealt face-down for all players to use. Another round of betting begins, and if nobody wagers, players can decide to “check” – to bet $0/pass their turn.

The Turn- a 4th community card is dealt face-up, and the betting round begins.
.
The River- a 5th community card is dealt and the final round of betting begins.

The Showdown– all players must reveal their cards to determine the winner. The last player to bet will reveal first, and others follow in a clockwise direction. If a player’s hand is weaker than those already revealed, he/she may “muck” discard the cards without revealing them. The player with the winning hand is awarded the pot, and the game concludes.
