The Aussie Millions

The Aussie Millions is the Southern Hemisphere’s largest and richest poker tournament, and features guaranteed prize pools of over AU$1 million. It number of participants has grown to more than 6 times what it started with, and it has attracted many international poker pros, such as Joe WSOP winner Joe Hachem. The Aussie Millions, or Crown Australia Poker Championship, is the largest poker tournament held in the Southern Hemisphere, with prize pools of over AU$7 million. Held at the Crown Casino in Melbourne, Australia, the tournament first took place in 2001 with only 40 entrants, yet went international in 2003 with 122 entrants and cash prizes exceeding AU$1 million. By 2005 the number of players had more than doubled, and saw many arriving from New Zealand, the USA, Canada, Sweden, Holland, Norway, Italy, and more. In 2006, the Aussie Millions had attracted several poker professionals including Joe Hachem and Daniel Nagreanu, and over 745 players with the top 80 “in the money”.

The Aussie Millions tournaments can be entered by winning the PokerStars satellite prize package, which includes buy-in for the No Limit Holdem championship, travel expenses, and spending money ($10,000 worth in total). Players can also buy-in directly via the PokerStars official website by emailing and paying using either wire transfer or bank cheque, or using their W$. The Aussie Millions tournament is held usually in January, and features a wide variety of poker variations. Some of these are No Limit Texas Holdem, Pot Limit Texas Holdem, Limit Holdem, Pot Limit Omaha, Pot Limit Crazy Pineapple, and a mix of limit games. Crown also holds daily satellite tournaments by demand for $1,150 single tables, which are held one day prior to the event.
