Find out about David Young’s big pay-off at the Virgin Poker festival, and how he described playing professional poker for the first time.
David Young from Dursley in Great Britain has recently triumphed at the Virgin Poker Festival and taken home a cash prize pool of nearly 7,000 pounds. Taking down his competitor in a nerve wrecking final round with a hand of three Jacks, Young has overcome many obstacles before reaching this highpoint in his career.
At 40 years of age, Young is already married and a father to 5 children. He began playing poker in the Summer of 1995, yet has only won two small events since; the 2001 Austrian Classics and the 2007 GBPT Grand Final, for a total cash winnings of no more than US$4,089. Until playing at the Virgin Poke Festival, Young was rated number 6608 in the ProRank 2 rankings. His victory took 200 other competitors down from across the United Kingdom.
Also known as “IndigoGB” t the tables, Young played the final hand daringly. He went all in and gambled his last chips before the dealer revealed the cards on the table. The move paid off and won him his biggest pay-check since starting to play poker. Working as a spray painter, he told reporters “my children will be getting some very nice Christmas presents this year. The money has already been spent.”
Despite marrying in Vegas, his wife has been reluctant to let him return for poker tournaments; “I am very lucky to have a wife who has let me go back to Las Vegas to play. She doesn't really mind as long as I win. Las Vegas is the best place in the world to play poker. I really enjoy it there.”
Now more than just an amateur poker enthusiast, Young had a lot to say to hopeful poker professionals. Mainly, that true winners are “quietly confident,” and that it is more helpful to one’s game to enjoy themselves rather than get distracted by nerves. Young will be returning to next year’s Virgin Poker Festival to defend his title.
