World Series of Poker

The World Series of Poker (WSOP) is the veteran of all poker tournaments. It has been in operation since 1970 when Benny Binion held a series of cash poker games at his casino the Binion’s Horseshoe. Johnny Moss won the first ever championship and was awarded a silver cup for his success. The following year, the tournament had already evolved into what it is more recognized for today, with over 45 events on offer and gold, silver, and bronze bracelets for the winners. The number of participants has also grown dramatically. There were only about 30 players in 1970, but by 2006 a whopping 9,000 had registered. In addition, the prize pools have expanded consistently each year. $340,000 was awarded to Doyle Brunson in 1977, $625,000 went to Johnny Chan in 1987, $1,000,000 was awarded to Stu Ungar in 1997, and a record-breaking $8,250,000 became Jerry Yang’s in 2007.

The WSOP has also given rise to some of the world’s most recognized and respected poker professionals. Some of the players to have made it big since their debut in the WSOP include Doyle Brunson, Stu Ungar,Johnny Chan, and Danial Negreanu.

The buy-ins for most games range from $1,000-$5,000, and $10,000 for the main event championship tournament. Those interested in registering can do so at the WSOP official website – www.worldseriesofpoker.com – about 4 months in advance up to 1 week before the event, or in person at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Les Vegas, Nevada. Deposits are accepted by cheque, wire transfer, credit-card, and in cash. All applicants must be 21 years of age and provide full identification. The WSOP and its associate casinos offer a range of satellite tournaments with entry into the main events for all qualifiers.
