The WSOPE Main Event was full of some of the most impressive names in poker all of whom were eager to take home the prize, and of course there were also a number of completely anonymous players. One of these unknown players was English man James Bord who is likely to create poker headlines for at least the next week as he won the 2010 World Series of Poker Europe Main Event Championship in his home country’s capital, London.
The crowd gave their full backing to Bord’s every decision, cheering him through the final table as if he was a member of their favourite football team. The huge amount of support probably helped him to overcome the massive chip lead which Fabrizio Baldassari held as they began heads-up play.
Bord’s turning point came when he decided to snap-call the all-in move that Baldassari made. Baldassari was holding Q8 and Bord was holding AK. The flop brought some real drama to the hand as Baldassari picked up four more outs giving him a gun-shot straight. However, Bord’s AK held-up and the two players effectively swapped their chip stacks.
From this moment on it seemed that Baldassari had lost heart, the game seemed to go purely in Bord’s direction and the crowd were cheering him on more and more with every passing minute. It seemed as if Baldassari had resigned himself to coming in second place.
